Methadone is a long-acting opioid agonist that has been extensively proven to be effective in treating opioid use disorder (OUD). It works by binding to the same opioid receptors in the brain as other opioids, such as heroin or prescription painkillers, but without producing the intense euphoria. This helps to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms, allowing individuals to focus on recovery efforts. Evidence-based studies have shown that methadone maintenance treatment significantly increases retention in treatment programs and decreases illicit opioid use. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, patients receiving methadone are 4.44 times more likely to stay in treatment compared to those not receiving medication-assisted therapy. Additionally, methadone treatment has been associated with a reduction in overdose deaths and the transmission rates of infectious diseases like HIV and Hepatitis C, underscoring its effectiveness as a critical component of comprehensive OUD treatment plans.

Patients undergoing methadone treatment for opioid use disorder often describe it as highly effective in alleviating withdrawal symptoms and reducing cravings. Many report that methadone allows them to feel "normal" again, without the constant physical and mental distress associated with withdrawal. This relief enables them to focus on rebuilding their lives, engaging in therapy, and pursuing personal goals. By stabilizing their condition, methadone provides a foundation for long-term recovery, helping patients regain control over their health and well-being. The medication is frequently praised for restoring a sense of stability and hope, which are essential components in the journey toward sustained sobriety.

*** Clients will receive a take home dose on Saturday for self-administration on Sunday. Clients must have a lockable box to pick up and store their extra methadone dose. If you miss dosing on a Saturday and/or show up on a Saturday without a lockable box, you will not receive a take home dose for Sunday. If the medical staff do not believe you can safely handle, take home, or store an extra dose, you will not receive a Sunday dose.
